Patharughat Rebellion a farmer Protest against British 


The British enslaved Bharat with their black intent and cunning but the people of Bharat tried every way to drive the British out in. Many revolts recorded in the history pages give proof of this. One of these revolts was the rebellion of Patharughat. The rebellion of the Patharughat tells the story of the farmers who stood against the loathsome tax policy of the East India Company. This rebellion is also known by the Patharughat (or Pathrighat) ron.

The reason for the Patharughat Rebellion


Assam falls under the British through the Yandabu treaty between the British and the Burmese King on 24 February 1826. From that point of time, Assam gets caught in the long term berry of slavery for the first time.

By robbing money from Bharat, British started using tax policy on the people of Bharat with the intention of opening a gold mine in their country. By keeping this intention in front, the British had increased the much amount of tax on the farmers of Assam. In 1832–33, the British raised a treasury of Rs 41,506 by levying 3 rupees tax on every farmer of Assam. Along with this, the British used different methods of tax collection. They did three parts of agricultural land. They increased the amount of tax duty by levying different taxes in three parts. Through which the British made 1,35,458 in 1842-43, 1,57,759 in 1852-53 and 1862- 63, treasured 7,43,489. After this, the British again increased the tax amount to 5 rupees in 1892-93. The condition of the farmers was getting worse.

Start of Patharughat Rebellion


Many districts and village farmers in Assam had protested against the greedy nature of the British. In this, the rebellion of Phulguri of Nagaon in 1861 was the first rebellion, Which is famous by the name "Phulguri Dheva". In 1869, in Bajali of Barpeta district, on January 10 of 1894, Rangiya of Kamrup district, started revolt in many places after that. All the peasants were united against the British. It also started to have a deep impact on the Darang district of Assam. The farmers of the Darang district held a meeting with all the farmers and decided that no matter what happens, we will not give the treasure.

The day of Revolt


A meeting takes place on 26 January 1894 at Patharughat. Where some of the farmers who live in other places also reached there.  Thousands of farmers gather in front of Tehsildar's bungalow and the farmer started protesting with slogans "Hari Bol " "Allah Hu Akbar". Only then the District Magistrate M. Anderson, Police Chief J.R. Berington, and Subdivision Officer M. Remington lays there with his soldiers and the weapon of arms. Farmers start shouting slogans against the unbearable British tax duty. But British officials were not ready to reduce the tax duty. A debate begins on both sides. The situation becomes very aggravating and on the orders of Berington, all the soldiers start firing blindly at those farmers. The farmer also fight with the help of the sticks, whatever was in his hand. But the gunfire put those farmers in the lap of Motherland. The farmers who used to grow crops in the lap of Motherland that mother was red with the blood of those farmers. On the ground of Patharighat, 140 farmers sacrificed their lives and 150 farmers were injured. The British published 15 deaths and 37 deaths on government documents to hide their evil deeds. But the truth can't be hide; no matter how much you try, one day there is light will come by ripping off the dark assay of darkness.

Memory of Patharughat Rebellion


All Assam Student Union has been observing this day of every year on the occasion of Farmers Martyrs Day since the 28th of January 1987. The soldiers of Bharat have also been providing Strategic honor to the martyrs of Patharughat since 29th January 2000. Also, Indian soldiers have established the Martyr column for the honor of peasant martyrs.

Those farmers sacrificed their lives for their rights. The farmers of our country not only feed the people of the country but can also sacrifice their lives for Mother Bharat. The Patharughat rebellion is a classic example of this. Thousands of examples will be found where the farmer of our Mother Bharat have sacrificed lots of for the country, for the people of the country. This article just a small tribute to those true patriot farmers of our nation mother Bharat.
